Primary research interests and areas of expertise within digital humanities

My primary research interest is in digital craftsmanship, its applications and relationship with the international and South African contemporary art spheres, specifically the discipline of sculpture. I focus on examining the benefits of digital three-dimensional (3D) technologies for contemporary sculpture, with specific focus on a South African art context.

Background overview, research, and role within the hub

Jonathan van der Walt is a visual artist based in Gqeberha, South Africa. His experience as a practicing artist is within the discipline of sculpture, with a passionate interest in the combination of 3D digital technologies in conjunction with traditional sculpting methods. In the practical exploration of his practice and research, he is often working in interdisciplinary collaboration with the eNtsa engineering unit, other artists as well as with traditional and digital craftspeople. His specific arts research specialisation and experience has afforded him the opportunity and responsibility of establishing and running the 3D printing lab for the School of Visual and Performing Arts at Nelson Mandela University, under the directive of Prof Pieter Binsbergen and funded by the Malan Trust.

Collaboration with other members of the hub or external researchers

I have previously worked on arts-based projects with Mandela University adjunct professor and visual artist, Marcus Neustetter.
