Mukhtar Raban is a lecturer and researcher in the Faculty of Humanities at Nelson Mandela University. He is the institutional coordinator of the Humanising Pedagogy project. He is also a former research fellow of UCT’s Centre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching. After teaching in English as a Second Language (ESL) programmes in colleges in the Middle East, he joined the university’s Linguistics and Applied Linguistics department. He currently lectures in professional English communication and language learning and teaching modules. He was awarded the university’s ‘Excellent Teacher of the Year’ in 2015 for his innovative in blended learning and teaching. His research interests include technology-enhanced language learning, digital humanities, humanising pedagogies and open learning. He has presented at a few conferences, and is currently completing a PhD in education with a focus on critical digital pedagogies. He is an associate director of teaching and learning at the International Open University.
